Reading project designed to help youngsters and less confident readers

By Suzi Muston in Local People

A brand new scheme designed to encourage more people to enjoy the delights of reading has just been launched by Southend libraries.

The project, reading ahead, invites less confident readers to read any six books of their choice over a six month period.

The readers will then meet up to discuss their views with one another.

The reading is designed to support youngsters and adults by changing their perception of reading, opening up opportunities and building their confidence.

Nationwide research shows one in six people struggle to read.

The research also highlighted that when people are inspired to read for pleasure, they benefit from greater opportunities in education and employment.
