A BASILDON teacher has been declared ’New Teacher of the Year’ at the Essex Teaching Awards.

Eleanor Leahy, from Beauchamps High School in Wickford, won after being nominated by deputy headteacher Matt Harper.

Asked why he had nominated her, Mr Harper said: “Where do I start? She’s phenomenal.”

He continued: “This is Eleanor’s second full year as a teacher and in her first year as an NQT she was already delivering outstanding lessons as the norm.

“Many experienced teachers would aspire to do the job the way she was doing it from the outset. As a new teacher, she was welcoming more experienced staff to come in and observe her outstanding practice.”

Mr Harper said Miss Leahy worked in her own time to tutor gifted and talented English students and helped her class win a national ’young critics’ competition organised by the Guardian newspaper, where they recited reviews of books at a London awards ceremony in front of the authors who had written them.

He said: “Eleanor goes over and above. She is so patient about making sure all her students maximise their potential. She is really inspirational to both students and peers.”
