THIS year's Poppy Appeal has a particular poignancy as it is the centenary of the start if the First World War, and members of Rayleigh and Hadleigh Royal British Legion have already started their campaign.

Sellers have been leaving the London Hill headquarters with trays of poppies hoping to surpass last year's fantastic £63,000 total for the legion's benevolent fund.

As the branch launches this year's appeal chairman Stephen Cowling said; “We make a plea to the public to once again be generous in their support so that the legion can continue its vital welfare work for our armed forces family past and present.

"Please buy your poppy and wear it with pride.”
