Body found beside railway line
Thursday, 12 July 2012
CASTLE Point MP Rebecca Harris has released a statement after British Transport Police said a man found dead beside the C2C train line may have been involved in metal theft.
Officers were called to the Castle Lane area in Hadleigh, between Benfleet and Leigh-On-Sea stations, on Wednesday, June 27.
They were called after a report was received of disruption to power lines and a body sighted on the railway embankment.
An ambulance and duty manager from Rayleigh and Southend ambulance stations also attended the scene.
The body of a man, believed to be a 46-year-old Canvey Island resident, was found.
He was pronounced dead shortly after 7am and police said he appeared to have been electrocuted.
A British Transport Police spokesman said: “This death is currently being treated as unexplained. The possibility that this death is related to an attempted cable theft is one line of enquiry at this time.”
Since the incident, a 43-year-old man, also from Canvey Island, has been arrested on suspicion of trespass and attempted theft of cable.
He has been bailed to return to a police station today (Thursday).
