A GOAL from Southend United’s Anthony Grant denied West Ham United a pre-season friendly win at Roots Hall on Tuesday night.
A large crowd of 8,008 meant kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes, but they enjoyed a hard fought encounter as both sides drew 1-1.
The match was Southend’s last pre-season friendly before kicking off their npower League Two campaign on Saturday, but it was the Hammers who started brighter with defender Manuel Da Costa firing over from Pablo Barrera’s cross.
Former Southend loanee Junior Stanislas struck a shot which took Glenn Morris two attempts to handle, who then had to keep out Freddie Piquoinne’s header.
Blues, who included trialists left-back Chris Barker and midfielder Ben Gill in the first-team, created their first chance with Luke Prosser heading over.
Morris was called into action again, keeping out Anthony Edgar’s long drive while Southend registered their first effort on target as Hammers keeper Marek Stech got down low to save Barry Corr’s free-kick.
Italian Alessandro Diamanti nearly broke the deadlock at the end of the half, but his chip failed to beat Morris.
Changes made in the second half disrupted the flow of the match, but Hammers went ahead just after the hour when Diamanti’s 20-yard shot deflected over Morris’ head and into the net.
But Southend hit back on 70 minutes when Louis Soares rolled a free-kick to Grant who blasted the ball past Stech.
Both sides had chances to take the spoils - Prosser volleying wide for the Blues, while Stanislas was again denied by Morris - but a draw was a fair result for both sides.
Southend kick-off their season at home to Stockport on Saturday, while West Ham entertain Deportivo La Coruna in the SBOBET Cup at Upton Park.
