BRENTWOOD boxer John McDermott’s hopes for British Heavyweight glory took a dent on Friday night.

McDermott, who turned 30 on Saturday, had no answer as Tyson Fury held onto his crown.

Fury posted a dramatic ninth-round stoppage in a scheduled 12-round final eliminator for the British title.

Although ahead 77-73 on all three judges cards after eight rounds, Fury, cut on the right eye and docked a point for holding, had to dig deep in sweltering conditions and was close to tears when interviewed at ringside after flooring McDermott three times.

The breakthrough came in the last 30 seconds in the eighth round.

Fury put together a two-fisted burst on the inside and McDermott crumpled to the canvas near his own corner.

The bell rescued him from Fury’s fists and at the start of the ninth, McDermott, perhaps sensing time was running out, waded into Tyson.

They launched right hands simultaneously, both connected and McDermott hit the deck.

He beat the count, flung a few blows at Fury and there was an exciting exchange of power punches that ended when Fury landed a right hand flush that sent McDermott over for the third time.

Again, he beat the count, but his legs were rubbery and referee Dave Parris waved it off.
