CANVEY legends watched as the Gulls started their 2010/11 season with a win against League Two’s Bradford City.

Launching their brand new 2010/11 home kit, Canvey welcomed former England under-21 manager, Peter Taylor, who will have his first season in charge of the once Premiership team.

Former Southend United manager, Steve Tilson, was also present during Wednesday night’s friendly at the Brockwell Stadium.

Canvey looked fresh from the end of season break and did not seem phased by the fact that Bradford are playing in the Football League.

Regulars Kevin Dobinson, Greg Cohen and James Rowe played some neat football while new signings Ashley Dumas and Danny Heale impressed.

The best chance of the first half came to Bradford striker James Hanson who was put clean through with just keeper, James Russell, to beat on 36 minutes.

However, Hanson sliced his shot in front 237 cheering supporters.

Midfielder Jon Edwards had to be taken off injured on 30 minutes and Canvey played with three forwards after Jay Curran replaced him.

Canvey finished the first half in encouraging fashion, with Cohen's cross missing Rowe inside the area.

At half time Bradford changed their entire starting eleven, with Canvey making two changes with Jason Hallett and Stuart Batch coming on for Rowe and Dobinson.

The Bantams had great chances to go in front but Russell, who was named Man of the Match, pulled off a string of saves.

When Russell was beat, Dumas covered to clear off the line twice.

The resilience finally paid off on 59 minutes when Cohen squared the ball to Hallett who slotted home.

Canvey should have gone two up when Cohen crossed again and found Rob King but his header hit the crossbar.

The Gulls seemed fairly comfortable from there and supporters were left delighted when referee blew for full time.

Manager John Batch said: "I am delighted with the win and I am looking forward to our game against FC Twente – the match is one of our biggest in the club’s history.

"Twente won the Dutch league last season and will be competing in the Champions League this year. We will play the first team and it goes without saying that we have a challenge."

Canvey are back in action on Saturday when they face the Dutch Champions FC Twente, who will be the first ever Champions League team to play on the island.

Bradford City kicked off its tour of Essex after beating Stambridge United 4-0 on Tuesday night.
