RAVI Bopara and Grant Flower gave Essex hope to make the semi-finals of the Clydesdale Bank 40 after their six-wicket win at Gloucestershire on Monday night.

The Eagles were hoping to bounce back after suffering a disappointing 85-run defeat at home to lowly Derbyshire on Sunday.

But with both Flower and Bopara hitting 45, and Mark Pettini chipping in with 37, Essex reached the target 185 with an over in hand.

The victory helped Essex go above Gloucestershire into second place onto 13 points by just one point.

With Yorkshire six points above Essex, the Eagles will fight for a last four place with Gloucestershire as best runners-up in the group.

Essex captain James Foster won the toss and put Gloucestershire into bat.

Openers Will Porterfield and Alex Gidman started well, but Essex bowlers bowled a tight line and prevented Gloucestershire from scoring freely.

David Masters did well to take 2-26, while Pettini took a great catch to send Steve Snell back to the pavilion.

Bopara got Essex off to a good start in their chase, leaving, Pettini, Flower and Matt Walker (32) to keep up Essex’s run rate and clinch a relatively comfortable victory, despite losing two late wickets.
