A MOTOR RACING team from Essex is hoping to just make a race as the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship makes its annual journey to Scotland this weekend.

AmD Milltek suffered disappointment two weeks ago at Silverstone when engine damage left them with no choice but to withdraw from the races.

A broken alternator belt on the team’s Volkswagen Golf during qualifying found its way into the engine’s timing belt, causing it to become displaced.

The resulting damage to the valves, rockers, tappets and the camshaft could not be repaired at the circuit.

“There was still about eight minutes of the qualifying session left and we’d just made some adjustments to the set-up,” reflected driver Shaun Hollamby.

“Our times had been coming down steadily during the morning practice sessions and, following the changes, the car instantly felt better when, coming out of Copse, it lost all power and wouldn’t re-start.”

The repaired engine was due to have been returned to AmD’s Thurrock base earlier this week and the team are looking forward to getting back on track at Knockhill.

Located just north of Edinburgh, Knockhill is regarded by many as the most daunting circuit on the BTCC calendar thanks to its undulating, off-camber characteristics, but Hollamby feels that these features will bring out the best in his car.

“The Golf’s strength is its handling through the corners and the twisty Knockhill circuit means that our lack of straightline speed will not be such a significant factor,” explained Hollamby.

“I’m confident that, if we can keep out of trouble and finish all three races, we can pick up some more points in Scotland and move closer to the top ten.”
