BLUES boss Paul Sturrock sat in the changing rooms as his son fired in the winning spot kick in a 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Gillingham on Tuesday night.

The Scot was not pleased with his side’s performance during the 90 minutes at Roots Hall, so went for ‘a wee think’ instead.

The roars of the crowd informed him of the result.

Goalkeeper Rhys Evans, who was making his debut in place of Glenn Morris, was the hero with two saves in the shoot-out as a dull match ended in a flurry of excitement.

Luke Rooney and Cody McDonald had early chances for the Gills, while Barry Corr and Adam Bouzid were denied by keeper Lance Cronin at the other end.

Frustrated boss Sturrock threw on Louie Soares and Sofiene Zaaboub in a bid to liven things up and later Matt Paterson came on for Corr, but there was still little to write home about.

Blair Sturrock missed the best chance of the game when he was denied by Cronin’s legs, but the manager’s chance was to have the last laugh.

The game went to penalties and there was immediate joy as Evans kept out Stefan Payne’s kick, but Craig Easton was later denied by Cronin.

Danny Spiller fired his kick over the bar for the Gills, but Anthony Grant - with the chance to win the match - saw his effort saved too.

There was not long to wait though as Evans stopped Jack Payne’s kick on the next penalty before Blair Sturrock fired the Shrimpers through.
