WEST Ham’s poor start to the Premier League season continued on Saturday with a 3-1 home defeat to Bolton Wanderers.

It was a harsh result on the Hammers, who began the game brightly and looked the team most likely to win for much of the first half.

Pablo Barrera had a bright start for the Irons, but it was Carlton Cole who was given the best opportunity to open the scoring when he was barged over in the box by Gretar Steinsson.

Cole took the penalty himself, but his unconvincing effort was easily saved by Jussi Jaaskelaien.

The Finnish keeper was to deny Cole and his team mates on a number of occasions in the first half and he had a hand in Bolton’s first goal on 48 minutes.

His long punt was flicked on by Johan Elmander and Matthew Upson swooped to head into his own net in an attempt to keep the ball from the sliding Kevin Davies.

To add injury to the insult, Upson took a knock in the face from the Wanderers front man and was replaced soon after.

The lively Elmander then added a second for Bolton on 68 minutes with a neat header from Chung-Yong Lee’s cross.

The Hammers got back into the game with a little more than 10 minutes to go when Mark Noble showed Cole how to take a penalty after Scott Parker had been shoved in the box by Gary Cahill.

But Elmander restored the two-goal advantage with his second of the game with six minutes remaining, drilling home beyond Robert Green.

The Hammers were due to host Oxford United in the Carling Cup last night (Tuesday) and go to Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday.
