‘Decisions cost us’

Blues boss Tilson upset with officials after his side lose at Yeovil

Yeovil Town 1-0 Southend United - Coca Cola League One

SOUTHEND United boss Steve Tilson felt three decisions by referee David Phillips contributed to his side’s 1-0 defeat to Yeovil on Saturday.

The Shrimpers saw debutant Sean Morrison red-carded on the half hour mark, before succumbing to Dean Bowditch’s winner on 76 minutes.

Tilson said: “It looks like Adam Barrett was coming back to cover when Sean Morrison was sent off.

“The referee told Sean four times that he was going to book him, but then shows him a red card and that has cost us the game.

“I don’t think it was a free kick when Yeovil scored and apparently their player has handballed it in.”

After an early chance for Southend, Yeovil took control of the game and laid siege to the away goal.

However, they found Steve Mildenhall, who played 85 times for the Glovers before joining Southend, in unbeatable form.

Then came Morrison’s sending off and Yeovil continued to press to take advantage of the extra man. Ryan Mason went close with a free kick before Andrew Welsh blazed over when clear on goal.

The home side continued to have the better chances in the early part of the second half with Scott Murray, Welsh and Mason testing the Southend rearguard.

But having held out for so long, the Shrimpers conceded with less than 15 minutes remaining as Bowditch turned the ball home from a freekick.

It was tough for the Blues, but manager Tilson was full of praise for his players.

“I thought the lads were excellent and felt we deserved something out of the game, especially playing with 10 men for so long.

“I’m so disappointed, but we have to soldier on and get back to winning ways against MK Dons on Friday.”
