MARK Pinnock thinks fundraising marathons are a bit old hat.

So for his latest effort, he added an 80k cycle ride and 33k row to the 42k run - and completed the lot in just under 10 hours.

Mark’s effort on Thursday was for St Francis Hospice, which cares for people from the Brentwood and Havering area.

Mark, who runs learning and catering businesses in Brentwood, is expecting to raise more than £1,000, adding to the £100,000 raised for good causes to date.

He said: “I felt that if I was doing all these things that I enjoy, I thought I could l help other people as well.”

The 49-year-old company director used treadmill, exercise bikes and a rowing machine for his charity ‘triathlon’ in a borough fitness centre.

“I have several marathons under my belt, but I find people look at me as if to say ‘Is that all?’ when I mention running for charity. They expect a bit more today.

“I have switched to climbing mountains, too, these days, but I thought I would have go at this sort of indoor triathlon,” he said.

Mark started his first event - the run - at 6.30am at Morton’s Fitness Centre, in Tallon Road, Hutton. That took 4hrs 9mins.

After a short break, it was on to the exercise bike for 2hrs 10mins, followed by 3hrs 30mins on the rowing machine.

“I enjoy a challenge,” Mark continued - which is something of an understatement.

Before he turned to mountaineering, his running exploits included more than 100 miles across the Sahara Desert in five days.

Since he became interested in climbing, he has conquered three of the world’s seven highest peaks - Kilimanjaro in Tanzania (19,340ft), Aconcagua in Argentina (22,841ft) and most recently Denali in Alaska (20,320ft).

Mark climbs in Scotland and Wales, but works on his day-to-day fitness at Morton’s. He plans to attack Mount Everest in May 2011.
