Newham pays its respects
Thursday, 12 November 2009
REMEMBERING: Councillor Paul Schafer, Councillor Marie Collier, Mayor Sir Robin Wales and Colonel Mike Dudding at the East Ham service.
NEWHAM officials and residents paid their respects to those who have died in conflict on Remembrance Sunday.
The Mayor, Sir Robin Wales, joined council chief executive Joe Duckworth and Police Borough Commander Simon Letchford at a service beside the cenotaph in East Ham’s Central Park.
Other services took place at All Saints West Ham Parish Church, St Mark’s Memorial, St Luke’s Memorial and at Upton Park.
Sir Robin said: “Thousands of men and women from around the UK put their lives at risk to fight for their country’s causes and sadly some are killed in the line of duty.
“We pay homage to them and those from generations past that died defending others.
“Their bravery is to be admired and respected.
“We must never forget what they have done for us.”
Sir Robin also laid a wreath on the pitch at West Ham United to remember members of the 13th Battalion (West Ham) of the Essex Regiment who died during the First World War.
