AN ASHINGDON mother has scooped an award for her work as a head’s personal assistant.

Shirley Wheeler, of Rectory Avenue, was given the recognition at a ceremony on Friday for her work at Greensward Academy, in Greensward Lane, Hockley.

The 49-year-old, who helps head, Debbie Stokes, was presented with the award by SecEd, an education newspaper that is sent to all secondary schools in the UK.

The mother-of-two said: “I was absolutely delighted to receive an award for the work I carry out on a daily basis.

“I step in to teach French and Spanish lessons when necessary and I think that stood out.

“I also give children a safe place to come when they need it and often give them a cup of tea and biscuit if they are fed up.”

Mrs Wheeler, who has worked at Greensward for three years, was one of 100 people to enter the competition.
