'Swine Flu vaccine is safe,' say NHS bosses
Thursday, 26 November 2009
NHS officials have reassured the public that it is safe to take the Swine Flu vaccine.
Dr Andrea Atherton, director of public health at NHS South East Essex, was responding to fears that many people, including those in the health profession, are refusing to take the medication.
She said: “I’d like to reassure people that the Swine Flu vaccine is safe.”
Dr Atherton explained that the European authorities have strict processes for licensing pandemic vaccines.
She said the vaccine is the best defence against Swine Flu and strongly urged everyone who is eligible for the vaccine to accept it and get the jab.
She added: “Not getting vaccinated means you’re taking a risk with your own health, and the health of others.
“The risk of complications from Swine Flu may be small, but the impact on those affected can be life-threatening,” she said.
There is more information available on the NHS and DirectGov websites.
Anyone with further questions is urged to talk to their local GP.
