Somerset v Essex – Specsavers County Championship Division One – Taunton – Day One – Summary
Somerset 75/4 (27.5 overs)
Essex (Yet to bat)
Somerset won the toss and elected to bat
ESSEX remain on course for their eighth Specsavers County Championship Division One title after early wickets put them in the box seat before the inclement weather ended the days play shortly before lunch on day one at Taunton.
Essex headed west, buoyed by their dramatic Vitality Blast success at the weekend and in the knowledge that avoiding defeat against their chief rivals would hand them the trophy for the second time in three years.
Sam Cook set the ball rolling, forcing Murali Vijay to play – Adam Wheater superbly completing the motion with a flying catch of the first ball of the second over.
Cook then trapped Steve Davies lbw, leaving the home side floundering on 14/2 and although – led by James Hildreth – Somerset looked to steady the ship – Simon Harmer put pay to his endeavour in front of the stumps, then took care of Tom Bantom two balls later as Essex took control.
The rain had been forecasted and it duly arrived forcing the players back to the pavilion, where they remained for the rest of the day. Weather permitting, play will resume on Tuesday at 10:30am.
