AFC Basildon Ladies rebrand as Hashtag United in exciting new venture

ESSEX SENIOR LEAGUE outfit, Hashtag United, have announced a brand new women’s football section with AFC Basildon Ladies rebranding in a historic merger between the two clubs.

Hashtag United, who were founded by YouTube creator and presenter, Spencer Owen, in 2016, already enjoys a sizable following, including a global audience of over one million fans across their digital platforms, which will be enhanced further with the addition of the FA Women’s National League Division 1 South East club.

It has also been confirmed that Hashtag United Women will compliment their first XI with teams at Under 23 development and Under 18 youth level.

An announcement broadcasted via Owen on the clubs’ official YouTube channel was championed by several well-known faces in the women’s game, including, Sue Smith, Karen Carney and Siobhan Chamberlain, as well as Chelsea men’s captain, Cesar Azpilicueta, who also confirmed his own involvement in Hashtag United.

Speaking about the new partnership, Hashtag United’s Commercial Director, Seb Carmichael-Brown, enthused: “We’re really excited about this next step on our journey; we’ve been wanting to do something like this for some time.

“We’re hoping we can use Hashtag’s existing audience to help generate even more interest in the women’s game which is still on a real high in this country after last summer’s heroics, and we’re confident that this represents an exciting opportunity for potential partners interested in reaching that audience with us.”

The women’s section will continue to play at Canvey Island’s Park Lane ground, while the men’s team will now switch from Chadfields, home of Tilbury FC, to Bowers & Pitsea’s Len Salmon Stadium.
