Sungate v Old Southendian – Essex Olympian League Premier Division – The Jack Carter Centre – Report

Sungate 2-0 Old Southendian

Old Southendian boss Altan Ali admitted his frustration after his side passed up a string of opportunities before slipping to a disappointing Essex Olympian League Premier Division defeat at fellow title challengers Sungate.

The Old Boys enjoyed plenty of possession and created a greater volume of opportunities. However, goals from Raphael Gomba (penalty) and Bailey Jones handed the hosts a 2-0 victory.

“We’ve been so clinical in recent weeks, so this is a big disappointment,” Ali told Yellow Sport.

“We’ve made enough chances to win a couple of games, but haven’t taken them. When you play teams around you at the top, they are capable of punishing you. That is what has happened today.”

Ali added: “We have responded well on the odd occasion we’ve had a setback this season and I expect the team will do it again. But this was a missed opportunity to close the gap. It is up to us to bounce back.”

Meanwhile, in Division Two, Old Southendian Reserves continued to make progress with an entertaining 6-3 victory over their Hutton counterparts at Garon Park.
