Old Southendian v Springfield – Essex Olympian League – Garon Park – Report
Old Southendian 1-2 Springfield
Old Southendian’s stop-start Essex Olympian League campaign continued as struggling Springfield recorded a narrow victory over Altan Ali’s side at Garon Park.
“It was another very, very frustrating afternoon for us,” Ali told Yellow Sport.
“We had a strong squad, so no excuses whatsoever.
The game was played out in difficult weather conditions, with the home side largely managing the turbulent wind well during the opening period. However, the Old Boys Achilles heal – poor defending from a corner – returned to haunt them.
“Until we learn to defend these situations, we are not going to be climbing the league any time soon,” Ali bemoaned.
With their tails up, Springfield swiftly doubled their advantage ahead of the interval
“I still believed we were in the game, what with the elements now in our favour,” the Old Boys boss explained.
But the home side passed up several terrific chances to reduce the deficit before Matt Tonkings finally pulled one back from the penalty spot two minutes from time.
Ali concluded: “If it was a boxing match, we’d have won on points. But football matches are not won like that. It was a ridiculous way to lose. Now we must pick ourselves up ahead of next week.”
