A combination of inclement weather and a gritty batting performance from Surrey skipper, Hashim Amla left Essex frustrated as their LV=Insurance County Championship Division Two encounter at the Kia Oval petered out into a draw.

Alastair Cook’s impressive performance with the bat was followed up by some livewire bowling from Jamie Porter, Sam Cook, Simon Harmer and Aron Nijjar had helped the visitors take a stranglehold. Having reached the sixty-ninth first-class century of his career, former England captain, Cook went on to reach 165 during a 450-minuter stint at the crease.

Cook’s knock was contrived from 330 balls and included twenty boundaries. Meanwhile, Dan Lawrence contributed 78 off 130 and Tom Westley 47 as Essex racked up the runs – Rikki Clarke, Jordan Clark, Daniel Moriarty and Reece Topley each snaffling two wickets apiece for the hosts.

The Essex attack soon got to work, forcing the follow-on having dismissed the home side for 161. Porter led the way with 3/27, while Harmer (3/49), Nijjar (2/22) and Cook (2/31) tightened the visitors’ grip.

Amla had been Surrey’s shining light with the bat, scoring 84 off 209 deliveries. And the Durban-born right-hander dug deep again, finishing unbeaten on 34 second time around, helping his side bat out for an unlikely share of the spoils.

Essex conclude their LV=Insurance County Championship Division Two campaign on Tuesday, September 21-24 when Northamptonshire visit the Cloudfm County Ground (10:30am).
