Orient impress at Millfields Road

Clapton Orient 2-1 Birmingham

Yellow Sport posted our reporter to an excited Millfields Road where Clapton Orient – sixteenth in Division Two – were taking on an impressive Birmingham team occupying third.

A sizable crowd, numbering 18,000 witnessed the Orient triumph by the odd goal in three with Walthamstow-born Henry Smith and Arthur Layton the men on target for Billy Holmes emerging side.

The Clapton Orient line-up was as follows: Gray, Tonner S, Nicholls, Forrest, Townrow, Nicholson, Smith, Layton, Dixon, Tonner J, Williams

Division One round-up…

First Division leaders, West Bromwich Albion, were held to a goalless draw by Liverpool at Anfield. Nevertheless, the Baggies remain seven points in front of Burnley, who thrashed Everton by five unanswered goals.

Chelsea are third despite their 0-0 draw with Derby County at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, leading marksman, Henry White, netted Arsenal’s goal as the points were shared with Preston North End at Deepdale.

Plenty of goals at Middlesbrough, where Bradford City were beaten by 4-0. Newcastle United also enjoyed the better of proceedings as Manchester City were dispatched by three goals to nil as St James Park. Tom Phillipson scored twice for the Magpies who handed debuts to William Bertram and Henry Wake who had moved to the club from Durham City and Birtley respectively.

Division Two round-up…

Tottenham Hotspur maintained their seven-point lead at the top of Division Two with a 3-1 success over bottom of the table Grimsby Town at White Hart Lane – Bert Bliss grabbing a brace and Arthur Grimsdell adding another in front of a healthy 32,000 crowd in North London. The Lilywhites have now scored more than 100 goals in the league this season.

Huddersfield Town remains second after a 2-1 success over Nottingham Forest. West Ham United earned a share of the spoils following a 1-1 draw with Hull City – Daniel Bailey with the Hammers goal in front of an 8,000 crowd at Anlaby Road.

Fulham shared four goals with Bury at Gigg Lane. Lincoln City were the big winners of the day, thrashing fellow strugglers, Coventry City by four goals to one.
