Appeal after early hours arson attempt in Chelmsford

Police are appealing for witnesses after an attempt was made to set fire to a property in Chelmsford during the early hours of this morning, Tuesday July 28.

At around 3.20am, a resident reported seeing somebody pouring liquid onto a doormat outside an address on Ashton Place.

The resident disturbed the person, who was said to be wearing a helmet, by shouting at them, causing them to run off in the direction of Hopkins Mead.

Officers arrived and found petrol and matches outside the address.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who saw the incident or has seen any unusual or suspicious behaviour on the road recently.
They would also like to hear from anyone who was in the area around this time and has dash cam or video doorbell footage.
