Arteta aware of the long road to recovery

Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool

Arsenal bounced back from Sunday’s North London derby disappointment. However, boss, Mikel Arteta, was mindful that one swallow doesn’t make a summer after the Gunners saw off Premier League champions, Liverpool, at the Emirates Stadium.

Sadio Mane profited from Andy Robertson’s centre to hand the Merseysiders a twentieth-minute lead. However, uncharacteristic defensive errors from Reds skipper, Virgil van Dijk, and goalkeeper, Alisson, provided opportunities for Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson to flip the contest on its head before the interval.

Arsenal remains six points adrift of the top four and Arteta insisted that a return to the glory days could still be some way off.

” I have seen it and I have experienced it. To do it in one year – and I have seen other clubs never do it or some clubs do it in four or five years,” the Spaniard explained.

“Depends on the context, depends on the resources, depends on how much you have to change.

“We are in a process, we don’t know at the moment. There is a lot of uncertainty in many areas, what we can control now is who we want to be as a team, the culture we are building in order to do that, the spirit to be successful and then improve our players.

“My main focus is to make our players better, make them feel more comfortable and create an identity for the club because it will be easier to say we need this, this and this.”

Arsenal now turn their attention to the Emirates FA Cup and a semi-final tie with Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, July 18 (7:45pm).
