Assault and robbery in Southend

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was assaulted in Southend late last night.

The victim, a man aged in his 50s, was walking in London Road, near to the junction with Milton Road, shortly before 11.50pm on Monday December 27 when another man shouted at him.

The other man ordered the victim to hand over a phone before punching him a number of times which caused the victim to drop two bags.

The attacker then picked up one of the bags and ran off into North Road.

Sergeant Chris Flynn, who is leading the investigation, said: “We believe this to be an unprovoked attack which was witnessed by a number of people, including taxi drivers and a woman passing by.

“In particular, we would like to hear from those taxi drivers in the area at the time who may have captured the incident on their dashcam.

“We believe the woman will be able to give a good account of what happened, which will also help us progress our investigation.”
