Back to basics for erratic Daggers?

Dagenham & Redbridge v Hartlepool United – Vanarama National League – Chigwell Construction Stadium – Saturday 3pm – Preview

A string of inconsistent results amidst another stop-start campaign has seen Dagenham & Redbridge boss, Daryl McMahon come under pressure from sections of the support.

A 3-1 setback at ten-man Notts County during the week did very little to quash recent frustrations and the Daggers chief pulled no punches in his assessment of the display: “I can take defeat at Notts County, it’s a tough place to go and a very good side,” he explained.

“But the performance was poor – it was embarrassing for me, it was embarrassing for the staff, it was embarrassing for the players.

“To play as poorly as we did, in the manner that we did. The lack of quality, urgency. Probably was scared, really. We’re playing a team that has been building for promotion for eighteen months, maybe two years, Notts County. It just showed how far we are from being a team challenging at the top end of the table.

Meanwhile, looking ahead to Saturday’s visit from Daggers midfielder Matt Robinson, said: “From what I have heard, they are a good footballing team.

“They play it out from the back, which is something we have been able to combat before against Grimsby, where they have tried to play it out and we have used our initiative to press, win the ball high, and score goals. Hopefully, that is something we can implement into our game on Saturday.

“I also think there has got to be an element of fearlessness. We have got to go for it because if you look at this division, teams at the top lose to teams at the bottom all the time and at the moment, they will be looking at us and thinking we are a team at the bottom, so we have got to utilise the underdog mentality to our advantage and just go for it, especially at home.”
