Ball pleased with ruthless U’s

Colchester United 6-1 Southend United – Reaction

Meaningless match? It certainly wasn’t as far as Steve Ball and Colchester United were concerned!

Neither the U’s or beleaguered Essex neighbours, Southend United, could progress further in the Papa Johns Trophy, however, one team wanted to put down a marker and the other simply wasn’t capable!

Colchester were ruthless, and rightly so. A local derby is a local derby, whatever the situation, whatever the competitions – the North Essex side displayed no mercy, probably with the managers stern words still ringing in their ears following Saturday’s FA Cup upset at the hands of Marine at the JobServe Community Stadium.

“We took this game very seriously and that one is for the fans,” Ball enthused

“I’m sure they were smarting like all of us, after Saturday.

“The players certainly had a point to prove, after what happened against Marine.

“We held a group meeting on Sunday and Monday where we talked about how big a game this was for us after Saturday and I think we knew that.

“There were quite a few other FA Cup upsets over the course of the weekend and unfortunately, we were one of them.

While Ball made five changes to the side dumped out of the cup, Southend boss, Mark Molesley made seven. However, it has to be questioned if those set to return can offer any more than the group embarrassed by their local rivals?

“This was a big game for Mark and his Southend side and he would have wanted to have got a positive result,” Ball added.

“But we wanted to win and do well too – it was a local derby and we produced a very good performance.

“It was a first-team match between the two sides and it was so important that we bounced back.”

U’s leading goalscorer, Jevani Brown, took his tally to nine for the season with his second hat-trick inside seven days: “They were great finishes from Jevani and his second goal was sublime and full of quality,” the U’s chief said.

“He’s shown that if you give him the service, he scores.

“He felt he should have got the winner against Marine on Saturday but he took his chances tonight and they were great finishes.”
