Barking and Dagenham Council today decorated the town hall and square in English flag bunting in celebration of St George’s Day.
The local authority usually organises an event in Barking town square for the occasion.
But this year it has asked residents to stay at home in line with pandemic restrictions.
Instead the square has been decorated, the St George’s flag has been raised at the town hall and the council shared a video message, featuring council leader Darren Rodwell and deputy leader Saima Ashraf, wishing residents a Happy St George’s Day.
Councillor Ashraf said: “Today we celebrate the story of St. George, England’s legendary national hero. We should use today to show and share in pride in our community, and also to celebrate those national heroes who we see every day – they may be parents, children, our loved ones, or people who have worked so hard and have been on the frontline this past year.”
