Basildon MP considers entering contest to become new Tory Party leader

Basildon and Billericay MP John Baron is considering entering the contest to become the new leader of the Conservative Party, and prime minister following the resignation of Boris Johnson.

Mr Baron said on Friday: “Recent events have shown that integrity and compassion have been a lower priority than they should have been within our political system. These principles are paramount for the proper functioning of Government.

“I am being encouraged by my local team and others to put my name forward and this I am now considering. I would be a newcomer to the contest and do not yet have the required eight signatures but will take soundings over the weekend.”

“We need a fresh start. Whatever my decision, I do believe there is a wealth of experience and talent on the back benches and I hope this comes together in support of solid candidates in order to give the membership the widest and best possible choice.”
