Battling Blues are beaten at Bromley

Bromley v Southend United – Vanarama National League – Hayes Lane – Report

Bromley 2-1 Southend United

Despite a desperate late rally, battling Southend United slipped to a frustrating 2-1 Vanarama National League defeat against a well-organised Bromley side at Hayes Lane.

Chances came at a premium during the game’s infancy. Bromley stopper Grant Smith produced a superb reaction save to deny Harry Cardwell. However, the home side made the breakthrough when Louis Dennis seized on hesitance between Harry Taylor and Collin Andeng Ndi and rolled into an empty net.

Ben Krauhaus fired over immediately after the restart as Bromley looked to kill the contest. Indeed, at this stage, Southend already looked somewhat leggy. Gus Scott-Morriss and Dan Money tried to redress the situation but their effort were rebuffed by some resolute Ravens defending.

Southend’s task was made harder when Michael Cheek added a second, drilling a low, right-footed strike beyond Andeng Ndi and in off the post.

But within a minute Southend gave themselves a lifeline. Noor Husin picked up the pieces following a Jack Bridge free-kick. His effort took a slight deflection and beat Smith at his near post.

Blues were enjoying their best spell of the match. Smith denied substitute Jack Wood, who found himself in the clear after exchanging passes with Cardwell.

Wood should have rescued a point for the Blues but his close-range strike was superbly blocked by Besart Topalloj as Southend pushed deep into stoppage-time. But the visitors lacked energy and a cutting edge in the final third.

Southend remains at the foot of the table with a minus-points tally. However, their well-documented issues remain far more of a concern as the clock continues to tick on the 118-year-old South-East Essex outfit.

Southend United returns to Vanarama National League action on Saturday, September 2 when Kidderminster Harriers are the visitors to Roots Hall Stadium (3pm).
