Braintree Town v Chippenham Town – Vanarama National League South – Dunmow Group Stadium – Report

Braintree Town 1-1 Chippenham Town

By Dave Bishop

Braintree Town and Chippenham Town shared the spoils in an entertaining 1-1 draw at Dunmow Group Stadium as the Iron finished the 2022 half of the season unbeaten at home in all competitions whilst maintaining their challenge for promotion. The result leaves them in ninth and three points outside a play-off spot.

With the match kicking off early there was a bumper crowd of 728 in attendance including fan groups from Oslo and Dusseldorf, as well as many who had travelled from all over the country to watch the game.

It proved to be an eventful first half for Braintree’s Alfie Matthews, who was shown a yellow card after just half an hour only to be injured just before the break and having to be replaced by Aaron Blair after sustaining a nasty cut to his eyelid.

Chippenham took the lead in the fifty-second minute through Jordan Young, formerly of Swindon Town, and shortly after both Matt Rush and Blair had chances to get the Iron back on equal terms before Kyran Clements blasted the ball into the net from outside the area to make it 1-1 fifteen minutes from time to set up a frantic finish as Braintree pushed forward in search of a winner.

With Jack Cawley shown a second yellow card, Braintree’s ten men fought bravely and although Rush and Lamar Reynolds went close, the game finished all square at one apiece.

Whilst Chippenham Town in twentieth place will be happier with the point, Angelo Harrop’s men will now turn their attention to the Essex derby against Chelmsford City at Cressing Road on Sunday.
