Beard frustrated with Hammers defending

West Ham United 2-4 Manchester United – Reaction

Five games into their FA Women’s Super League campaign, West Ham United are still searching for their first three points of the campaign.

The latest setback, a 4-2 defeat at the hands of in-form Manchester United, drew a spirited display from Matt Beard’s slide. However, the Hammers chief was still bitterly disappointed with aspects of his side’s performance.

“We shot ourselves in the foot, massively – I’m frustrated with the second and third goal more than the first and the fourth,” he explained.

“It’s a simple part of what we set up to do, not allowing the holding midfielder to get on the ball. We’ve shown character today but we’re fragile on confidence.

“We have battled and got back into the game twice. We shot ourselves in the foot by conceding quite quickly afterwards when we need to be better in those moments.

Beard continued: “On our day, we have a good team. We can compete with anyone. We felt today was a good opportunity to kick-start our season. We had five, six missing over the last two weeks, which has been frustrating.

“We’ve got a lot of them back today, which was good. Hopefully, everyone that goes away on international duty can stay fit.

“In a period in November and December, we have some really winnable games. I believe in this group of players and with everyone fit, we can cause anyone problems.”
