Essex Eagles gave themselves an opportunity of a home Vitality Blast quarter-final draw after thrashing Glamorgan by 69 runs at the Cloud County Ground.

Essex provided a brutal batting masterclass, posting the biggest Blast score at Chelmsford as well as the fifth highets in Blast history. 

Adam Rossington set the tone with 45 off 32 balls, while Dan Lawrence led the way with an explosive 71 off 37. Paul Walter was also amongst the runs, his 58 off 23 included six 6s. Indeed, the Glamorgan attack was on the receiving end of sixteen maximums. Dan Douthwaite suffe4ring the most, going for 66 off his four-over spell.

Despite two early wickets from Aaron Beard, leaving the Welshmen floundering on 9/3, the visitors refused to throw in the towel. Stand-in skipper, Sam Northeast optimised the Glamorgan’s never-say-die attitude. His unbeaten 97 came off 56 deliveries and included ten 4s and four 6s. Nevertheless, his effort was always going to be in vain.

Daniel Sams returned figures of 3/20, and Beard 2/16 to move Essex into second place in the South Group ahead of Somerset’s clash with Surrey on Sunday. Defeat for Somerset will ensure a Chelmsford last-eight tie for the Eagles.
