THREE fire crews were scrambled to Lakeside shopping centre on Friday after a car caught light, setting fire to nine other vehicles.
One man had to be treated for smoke inhalation. The car park suffered ‘smoke and fire damage’ and seven cars were ‘destroyed’.
Fire engines from Grays and Orsett were dispatched to a multi-storey car park in West Thurrock Way at 12.53pm on September 13.
Watch manager Mark Hampton said: “The fire started when a moving car began producing smoke and caught alight.
“Thankfully, the driver and his family evacuated the area quickly as the fire began to spread to nearby cars.
“When our crews arrived there were about nine cars affected by the fire and our firefighters did a great job of stopping the fire spreading any further.”
