Blues eyeing top half of the table after extending unbeaten sequence

Southend United v Barnet – Vanarama National League – Roots Hall Stadium – Reaction

Southend United 2-1 Barnet

Southend United are finding a way to win at the moment.

Okay, so it’s not always pretty, but it’s honest, effective and above all, the fans like what they are seeing.

Matthew Dennis bagged a first-half brace to see off Barnet at Roots Hall. Adam Marriott pulled one back for the visitors, setting up a tense second period. However, Blues moved up to thirteenth place in the Vanarama National League table after recording their fifth win in seven outings. Their unbeaten run stretches back to early December.

“After the way we started, two-up, I thought we were a threat every time we attacked and to then conceded one puts you on the back foot again,” boss, Kevin Maher explained.

“I’m delighted to come away with three points and that’s the most important thing.

“We had a couple of chances and a few opportunities to get the third which would have put it to bed but when you don’t do that the teams always have a chance.

“To be fair to the players, they’re winning games and I keep saying we haven’t won enough football matches at this football club for a long, long time, so it’s a good habit to get into and one that we want to keep going.”

On matchwinner Dennis, Maher added: “It was good reactions from a centre forward and if you get a few of them a year you’ll be happy.

“I’m delighted with Matty. He was probably below par on Saturday [ buthe was sharp again tonight, so I’m really pleased with him, and he had to take his two goals ever so well.”
