Boreham Wood v Southend United – Vanarama National League – Meadow Park – Report

Boreham Wood 1-1 Southend United

Southend United extended their unbeaten Vanarama National League sequence to seven matches but had to settle for a share of the spoils against a well-drilled Boreham Wood side at Meadow Park.

At times, this felt very much like Southend’s home game with Blues fans outnumbering their Boreham Wood counterparts. The travelling contingent, numbering 1,293, was celebrating just after the twenty-minute mark when Jack Bridge scored from the penalty spot after Wood goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore had flattened Daniel Kanu.

But Southend were unable to kick on and looked tired after the break. Indeed, their home side responded two minutes after the restart when Erico Sousa provided a neat finish after finding some room amidst a static Southend backline.

Southend stopper, Nick Hayes, produced several fine saves to preserve a point for Kevin Maher’s men who remain in the fourteenth place, six points off the play-off positions.

Southend United returns to Vanarama National League action on Saturday, Novemeber11, when they take on Altrincham at the J. Davidson Stadium (3pm).
