Chesterfield v Southend United – Vanarama National League – Technique Stadium – Report
Chesterfield 2-2 Southend United
Southend United extended their unbeaten Vanarama National League sequence to twelve matches with a hard-fought 2-2 draw with promotion-chasing Chesterfield at the Technique Stadium.
Blues arrived in Derbyshire off the back of draws with Eastleigh and Solihull Moors – Kevin Maher’s men looking to continue their excellent recent form.
The Spireites started the brighter and took the lead in the ninth minute. Jeff King sent a stunning strike high beyond Steve Arnold from fully thirty yards.
Southend battled back doggedly, levelling the score six minutes after the restart. Will Atkinson was brought down by Chesterfield goalkeeper, Scott Loach. Sam Dalby did the honours from the resulting spot-kick. His seventh goal of the campaign.
But the Blues were to be undone in the final stages. Calvin Miller reacted swiftly to a King centre, heading low into the corner of the net to restore the home sides’ advantage.
Callum Powell passed up a glorious opportunity for Southend, sending his effort wide after finding himself in the clear. However, this Southend side simply doesn’t know when they are beaten. Powell’s cross was turned into his own net by substitute Fraser Kerr, sending the 800-plus travelling contingent into raptures and salvaging a point in the process.
