Southend United v Chertsey Town – Emirates FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round – Roots Hall Stadium – Report
Southend United 4-1 Chertsey Town
Southend United survived an early scare before seeing off spirited Pitching In Isthmian League South Central outfit, Chertsey Town to make Emirates FA Cup progress.
The troubled Blues, under the interim leadership of Jason Demetriou and playing at the qualifying stage for the first time in almost a century, found themselves behind after just six minutes when Casey Maclaren nodded the part-times into a shock lead.
However, the Blues – battered and bruised – fought back to lead before the interval. Nathan Ferguson’s volley levelled the score eight minutes later, then Jack Bridge teed up leading marksman, Rhys Murphy to fire Southend ahead from close range.
Blues put their recent troubles behind them after the restart. Nathan Ralph superbly headed a third to secure Southend’s passage to the first round proper – Bridge again the provider. And it was left to Louis Walsh to add icing to the cake with a fourth to send the Roots Hall faithful home with an overdue smile on their faces.
Southend United return to Vanarama National League action on Saturday, October 23 when they take on Dagenham & Redbridge at the Chigwell Construction Stadium (3pm).
