Blues pip Canaries kids

Southend United 2-1 Norwich City U23

Vanarama National League outfit Southend United recorded a narrow 2-1 victory over Norwich City’s under 23 side in what proved to be a competitive pre-season warm-up fixture at Roots Hall Stadium.

Rhys Murphy fired Southend ahead from the penalty spot after Joe Rose had felled the former Chelmsford City and Yeovil Town man. However, the Canaries were back on terms shortly before the interval – Abu Kamara curling into the bottom corner of the net after carving himself an opening.

But Southend were not to be denied. Jack BRidge restored the home sides’ advantage straight from the kick-off.

Phil Brown’s men passed up opportunities to extend their advantage further. Speaking after the match, the Blues boss explained: “I was disappointed in the first-half because for all we might have won the game but you’re playing against a very young team out there.

“You can only beat what’s in front of you but at the same time you can beat them in a way that sends a message out to people, and I don’t think we were sending the right message out in the first-half.

“In the second-half I thought we got after them and played some better football. I was more pleased with the second-half performance, which didn’t bring any goals strangely enough, than I was the first-half performance. Overall, a good 90-minute workout for 75% of the squad.”

Southend United now turn their attentions to the Vanarama National League opener at King’s Lynn Town on Saturday, August 21 (3pm).
