BASILDON TOWN have announced the appointment of former striker, Marcus Bowers, as their new first-team player/manager.
Bowers arrives back at the ProKit UK Essex Olympian League Premier Division club following spells with Basildon United, Great Wakering Rovers, Tilbury and Witham Town, bringing with him a talented coaching staff which includes Jamie Selby-Knight, Jack Main and Charlie Pardoe.
During his spell as a player with Town, they clinched a historic Olympian League Division One and League Cup double during the 2016/17 campaign.
Speaking about his appointment, Bowers explained: “Basildon Town is a club close to my heart.
“I’ve been around the club in a playing or coaching capacity for many years so when the position opened up I was keen to return full-time and help them build for the future.
Bowers confirmed that his intentions of donning the boots, adding: “I intend on having a player/manager role. I have played step four football for the last two seasons and have experienced this role on a Sunday.
“I believe I still have a lot to offer on the pitch, as well as helping the players progress off it.”
And the new boss clearly couldn’t wait to get started, adding: “Our style of football will be entertaining. We will look to play football wherever possible and consider ourselves lucky to have a great playing surface which will suit this.
“We are aware this will not always be possible, so time will be devoted in training to make sure we are fit and organised. If we get these basics right, then we will be able to adjust our style when required.”
When quizzed about his ambitions for Basildon Town, Bowers responded: “Myself and the coaching team are all young, hungry and very ambitious.
“We cannot wait to hit the ground running with the hope of bringing instant success back to the club.
“In the longer term, we are looking to work closely with Basildon Sport & Leisure to climb as high up the football pyramid as possible.”
