Bramall buoyed by narrow U’s success

Colchester United 1-0 Exeter City – Reaction

MATCH-WINNER, Cohen Bramall, had every reason to be content with his and Colchester United resolute performance and result against Exeter City in the first-leg of their Sky bet League Two play-off semi-final.

Unsurprisingly, following such a lengthy lay-off from competitive football, the game was far from a classic. However, the U’s defended confidently before Bramall crystalised an otherwise drab affair with a golden moment nine minutes from time.

“Yes, it was amazing for us to get the goal and better to get the win,” the 24-year-old enthused.

“We are confident going into the second leg at Exeter- big pitch, that’s going to suit us, that’s going to help us a lot being away.”

Bramall had tested Grecians goalkeeper, Lewis Ward, with a dead-ball effort earlier in the contest: “Yes, I went for the left side of the keeper, going for a reverse. I think I’ve hit it a bit too straight, but I’m confident about taking all set-pieces.

“I’ve been practising the whole season, recently, night and day I’ve been practising them Paul has been on to me, the lads have been on to me and it has come off.

Bramall insisted shooting for goal was his immediate thought when lining up that late free-kick: “To be fair, when I put the ball down, the keeper was in the centre of the goal and took two steps to his right. I thought there’s enough space to whip the ball in the top right-hand corner – that’s what I did.”
