Gillingham v West Ham United – Priestfield Stadium – Emirates FA Cup Third Round – Sunday 6:16pm
Gillingham v West Ham United – Preview:
BRIAN DEAR was delighted to see West Ham United emphatically see off AFC Bournemouth on New Year’s Day and the former frontman now hopes the Hammers repeat the dose at Sky Bet League One side, Gillingham when the east Londoners begin their 2020 Emirates FA Cup campaign.
West Ham epitomised a David Moyes side against the Cherries. They looked fit, hungry and organised – it looked like a huge weight had been lifted from their collective shoulders.
“We seemed to be playing with a smile – the players were enjoying themselves,” Dear explained.
“The team were at it right from the start, the difference was startling. I know Bournemouth were carrying a few injuries, but you can only beat what is put in front of you. They still fielded a Premier League team of players and we thrashed them!”
Looking ahead to what is a potentially tricky trip across the river, Dear added: “It’s a game West Ham have to take seriously and should really win.
“I know the FA Cup can throw up some unusual results and Gillingham will fancy causing an upset, particularly at their place – It’s always difficult going there.
“But I think David Moyes realises that a win would build momentum, confidence and give something back to the supporters. They have suffered in recent years what with us losing to the likes of Wigan, Wimbledon and Oxford. It’s time to put the record straight.
“I don’t think we can afford to go under-strength. Gillingham are on a decent run in the league and have earned this tie. Hopefully, it will be more of the same from West ham following on from Bournemouth and we are in the hat come the final whistle.”
