West Ham United v Southampton – London Stadium – Premier League – Saturday 3pm

West Ham United v Southampton – Preview:

Brian Dear was left with mixed emotions after West Ham United’s Premier League defeat at Liverpool on Monday evening.

The former frontman was frustrated and disappointed that the east Londoners again allowed a lead to slip, but was proud of the way the player’s stood up to the challenge against the best club side on the planet at the moment.

“It was hard to take after the team had played so well,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“The mistakes proved costly, and you know when you play against a side with so much quality you are going to be under constant threat. But we gave them something to think about. If we can add quality to that spirit then we a=have a chance of beating the drop.

Usually, reliable goalkeeper, Lukasz Fabianski, was at fault for two of the Reds goals, but Dear backed the Polish stopper to bounce back.

“Lukasz has been fantastic since he came to West Ham. he knows he should have done better and was clearly disappointed at full-time. But you could see he cares and we know how good he has been. He will recover. He’s a top-class keeper.”

Dear was quietly optimistic over the Hammers chances as they prepare to face Southampton in a huge clash at the London Stadium on Saturday.

“Of course, there is no room for error now,” dear added.

“We have to replicate that Anfield performance, without the mistakes. Southampton are a decent side on their day. They ran all over Aston Villa last weekend, but West ham gave us enough evidence on Monday to suggest they can make a fist of this relegation battle, starting with a win on Saturday.

“We will have to play on the front foot and defensively we must improve. It’s a massive match. Winning it can set us up and restore confidence. It’s in the hands of the players to turn things around.”
