Brian Dear: Hammers are running on empty

Chelsea v West Ham United – Premier League – Stamford Bridge – Sunday (2pm) – Preview

Brian Dear isn’t sure where West Ham United will find the energy from when they head to Chelsea on Sunday.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the Stamford Bridge club, Thomas Tuchel’s side remains on course for a top-four finish while playing some exceptional football.

While West Ham has performed heroically to book a UEFA Europa League semi-final place, their Premier League form has dipped. Indeed, David Moyes’ side looked jaded during their most recent outings against Brentford and Burnley.

“We are running on empty,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“The league matches have been a tough watch and the injuries are hindering us further. In this situation, Chelsea away isn’t the game you want to see just over the horizon.

“They are playing some smashing football. Chelsea were terrific against Real Madrid and was unlucky to slip out of the Champions League. But they will be boosted by booking an FA Cup final appearance. It’s a tough ask for the Hammers.

“I know they were surprisingly beaten by Arsenal on Wednesday night, but I think it was only a blip. Defensively, they are sometimes fragile. It is whether we are capable of exposing them as the Gunners did?

Dear continued: “We’ve had a win and a couple of draws at Chelsea in recent seasons, but I think this one might be a bridge too far.

“We can’t look at the game as a free hit because we still need enough points to finish in the top six. But last weekend suggested we’ve nothing left in the tank and are receiving what we’ve got for Europe.

“I think we are better than setting out on a damage-limitation mission, but I’m struggling to see us heading back across the capital with anything more than a draw, and that might be a little ambitious.”

Brian Dear’s prediction: Chelsea 2-2 West Ham United
