Brian Dear: Hammers must be more adventurous

Southampton v West Ham United – Premier League – St Mary’s Stadium – Tuesday (6pm) – Preview

Like many West Ham United supporters, Brian Dear was baffled with David Moyes’ team selection ahead of Sunday’s draw with Brighton at the London Stadium.

Over-cautious or unadventurous – Take your pick? West Ham lacked flair and creativity in a match the fans would have expected them to win.

Moyes accepted the criticism and admitted his selection was. Nevertheless, former frontman, Brian Dear, has urged the Scotsman to throw caution to the wind ahead of tough trips to Southampton and Everton, suggesting the Hammers are incapable of blanket defending for prelonged periods.

“I understand we must be strong at the back, but surely playing a higher line and asking a few questions of our own will offer a better chance of success,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“I don’t want to be too critical of the manager because we have been far more organised and tougher to beat since he returned. What he has achieved should be respected. But we do have players capable of hurting the opposition such as Manuel Lanzini and Said Benrahma and I want to see more of them.

“We have two very tough away games ahead of us. If we sit back, defend and simply try to hold on to the ball, I think we’ll get swamped. As I said, these are already hard games. I think it would be better to go into them giving the opposition something to think about. Let them do the worrying.”

Dear admitted Southampton had surprised his this season, adding: “Ralph Hasenhuttl has moulded them into a decent side. Like West Ham, they are looking to break into the top half of the Premier League and make a continued impact.

“They have some talented attack-minded players such as Che Adams and James Ward-Prowse. Danny Ings is a big miss for them, but they have experience and quality – We must match them.

“West Ham have done well against Southampton of late. I think we can go there and get something and expect us to as well.”
