West Ham United v Newcastle United – London Stadium – Premier League – Saturday 3pm

West Ham United v Newcastle United – Preview:

Brian Dear remained baffled by West Ham United’s recent loss of form and suggested that Manuel Pellegrini and his men look to get the basics right when they face struggling Newcastle United in the Premier League at the London Stadium on Saturday.

The Hammers are without a win in five league outings and were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League One Oxford United a month ago. Performances have been disappointing and lacked creativity.

“Of course, we’ve seen it all before at West Ham, but I really thought we had turned the corner this time,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“We are creating fewer and fewer chance, which largely we are not taking. The team looked flat at Everton and without direction against Sheffield United. Maybe we need to be taking a look at the Blades? They do the basic things well and battle for each other like it’s the last game they are going to play. Robert Snodgrass aside, I’m struggling to pick out a West Ham player to fit that particular bill at the moment.

“I know we lack a potent goalscorer. Whether that is rectified in January remains to be seen. But in the meantime, we need to find a way to start winning again. Perhaps that means a different approach? More direct? We all enjoy seeing the team move the ball around, but only if there is an end product.”

Looking ahead to the visit of Newcastle, Dear added: “Although they are struggling, Newcastle have proved to be difficult to break down and have beaten both Spurs and Manchester United based on solid defensive performances.

“This could be a similar match to Sheffield United but hopefully, West Ham has learned, will be a bit more adventurous and more clinical in front of goal.

“If we have aspirations of finishing comfortably in the top half of the Premier League then these are the games we simply have to win.”
