Everton v West Ham United – Goodison Park – Premier League – Saturday 12:30pm

Everton v West Ham United – Preview:

BRIAN DEAR insisted West Ham United’s Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace could have been averted had the east Londoners taken their chances and the former frontman has urged Manuel Pellegrini’s men to rediscover their cutting edge ahead of Saturday’s visit to Everton.

Goodison Park has traditionally been an unhappy hunting ground for West ham, although they have won twice at the Merseysiders home in recent seasons. Nevertheless, despite that setback to Palace before the international break, Dear thought West Ham had the ability to bounce back against the misfiring Toffees who sit in the relegation zone following four successive defeats.

“It is easy to over-react to the Palace result,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“Of course, we have done much better this season, but need to recognise that Crystal Palace has as well. We had plenty of opportunities to kill the game off – we didn’t take them – we move on.

“I think Manuel will be looking for a potent striker in January. That aside, there isn’t too much wrong with the way we are playing. We just need to be more ruthless. It’s as simple as that.”

Looking ahead to Everton, Dear added: “Once again, the pressure is all on the home side. There is so much expectation at Everton and once again they are not delivering.

“They are a huge club – it was always terrific playing at Goodison back in my days. But they seem to be treading water at the moment. They have a fan-base – like West Ham – who are keen to see them progress, but it not going right for them at present.

“I think it will be a close game. But if we can rediscover our touch in front of goal, taking advantage of the creativity we now have, then I think we will bring back the points on Saturday.”
