West Ham United v Watford – London Stadium – Premier League – Friday 8pm
West Ham United v Watford – Preview:
Following their four-goal demolition of Norwich City, everyone connected with West Ham United could be forgiven for perhaps thinking that their quest to secure another Premier League campaign was al but complete.
Indeed, after Michail Antonio had single-handedly destroyed the Canaries, the Hammers sat six points clear of the dropzone with opportunities for those below them running out fast.
But in another dramatic twist, both Aston Villa and AFC Bournemouth – both previously looking unlikely to win again this season – found their feet. The gap was closed, the pressure back on West Ham and Watford who ironically meet at the London Stadium on Friday evening.
A victory for either side will all but end any relegation fears with two games to spare and former Hammers forward, Brian Dear, has called upon his former team to settle the issue as quickly as possible.
“Get the job done,” Dear told Yellow Sport.
“The performances have been far better of late. Watford are in the same boat but they shouldn’t hold any fears for us. We were ruthless at Norwich and proved we have goals in us against Chelsea and Newcastle. The same attitude and commitment are required to see us over the line.
“Of course, we still have another two matches, but Manchester United at Old Trafford will be mighty difficult and we really don’t want to be involved in a shootout with Villa on the final day.”
Dear added: “It’s really got to be done on Friday. Watford have won two on the spin and Nigel Pearson will have them fired up, but I think we have a little more quality and that should be enough if we match them in the battle.
“I’ll be as relieved as any Hammers supporter to see us pull away from the relegation zone. The problem is, this is a recurring theme. We need to ensure safety and that the next ‘clean slate’ doesn’t and up consisting of the same script.”
