Brian Dear: There’s no time to dwell on Europa League disappointments

Norwich City v West Ham United – Premier League – Carrow Road – Sunday (2pm) – Preview

Brian Dear was just as disappointed as any West Ham United supporter after their UEFA Europa League semi-final exit at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt. Nevertheless, the former Hammers frontman insisted the team need to look forward and not dwell for too long on the setback.

Speaking to Yellow Sport ahead of Sunday’s Premier League visit to already-relegated Norwich City, Dear said: “We need to pick ourselves up and at least secure a Europa Conference place ahead of next season.

“If this run has proved anything, the European ties have created huge interest. Ideally, we would like to get back in the Europa League, but having some form of Thursday night football next season at least keeps the momentum going.

“If that is the case, then I’m hopeful that we can strengthen the squad and have another go at it. We were thin on the ground and need to be able to rotate and remain competitive. The club have taken a step in the right direction, but now needs to be seen progressing further with decent signings capable of challenging for trophies.”

Looking ahead to the trip to Carrow Road, Dear added: “They have nothing to lose and will want to finish the season on a high, while we might be suffering a hangover from Thursday night? Despite their league position, this one could go either way.

“Personally, I think it might be a draw. Both sides are quite open. I think it will be an entertaining game. We need to take the three points, keeping Wolves at arms-length.

“They’ve been a bit of a bogey team over the years. I read that we’ve only won three of the last seventeen meetings with the Canaries. Teemu Pukki provides most of their goals. We need to be on our guard.

“Whatever happens, I still think this has been a good season. I just don’t want it to finish on a downer. We have three matches left. Try to finish with a flourish.”
