Newcastle United v West Ham United – Premier League – St James Park – Saturday (5:30pm) – Preview

Back-to-back victories in the Premier League and Emirates FA Cup have lifted spirits at West Ham United. However, former frontman, Brian Dear isn’t convinced that the East Londoners are ready to take all three points when they take on in-form Newcastle United at St James Park on Saturday evening.

David Moyes’ men followed a 2-0 league triumph over fellow strugglers, Everton, by booking a fifth-round cup clash at Old Trafford after seeing off plucky League One side, Derby County: “I’m pleased that we’ve shown a bit of grit,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“The two victories will lift confidence, although I think you need to take the opposition into account. Everton were very poor, while Derby ply their trade two divisions lower than us. They were both games we should be winning.

“I actually thought that Derby looked better than Everton at times. But we can only beat what is put in front of us. Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio are back amongst the goals, which, of course, is a bonus, while Aguerd at the back looks like a terrific player. So there are good signs.”

The Hammers take on a Newcastle side flying under the management of Eddie Howe and who have lost only one of their twenty Premier League outings to date.

“This is going to be a tough one for us,” Dear added.

“Newcastle are all-action and look good all over the pitch. These are exciting times on Tyneside. They are linked with almost every big signing. The fans up there are loving it. I don’t think that long-awaited trophy is too far away for the Magpies.

“We can compete with them, but I think they have greater quality than us right now which is reflected in the league table.

“We are in no position to prioritise matches. We need to build confidence and momentum. A point at St James, particularly these days, would be a great return. However, I’m not convinced we are up to the task right now although I’m happy to be proved wrong.”

Brian Dear’s prediction: Newcastle United 2-1 West Ham United

Jeevesie’s prediction: Newcastle United 2-0 West Ham United
